artists : thomas muller

(I can't seem to make Blogger render the umlaut above the U in Muller's last name...sorry Thomas!) I first saw the work of the German artist Thomas Muller back in 2003 at the Chinati Foundation in Marfa, TX. Muller had a residency there. I've had his work in mind a lot recently.

homage a la html
It wouldn't feel right to screengrab an image from Chris Ashley's fun new series of html drawings. But I laughed out loud when I saw the first one. Awesome, dude!Labels: artists, miscellany
john zurier at larry becker

John Zurier's show "Night Paintings" opened at Larry Becker on Saturday. It continues through April 19.
At the opening, I met Steven Alexander, an artist with whom I've been acquainted on the internet. I love when internet connections become face-to-face connections.
I'm hoping to write something about my personal relationship with John Zurier's work in the near future, but in the meantime, I pretty much agree with what Steven writes.

interview : chris martin

Chris Martin, Untitled, 2007, oil and collage on canvas, 54 x 49 inches.
There's a terrific interview with painter Chris Martin here in the Brooklyn Rail. Martin is showing currently at Mitchell-Innes & Nash in New York.
Martin:
"I'm giving myself permission to try stuff. I've gotten more accepting of the things that I can't do and hopefully more accepting of the things I'm compelled to do over and over."

video : larry poons

Here's an interesting series of video interviews of Larry Poons with curator Karen Wilkin, produced late last year to accompany the exhibition Color as Field: American Painting, 1950--1975, on view at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington beginning February 29.
Larry Poons:
"[Ambition]...it's required...you know...to get over the indecision that you live with...all the time."

video : linn meyers
Here's a time-lapse video of my friend Linn Meyers making a wall drawing at the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art. Note that the video documents 5 days of work in the span of a few minutes. The piece was made for the exhibition The Space Between. February 2 - April 12, 2008. It's a small group exhibitions with a nice lineup. Here's info from the exhibition anncouncement:
Featuring artwork by Freddy Chandra, Brent Hallard, Linn Meyers, Gay Outlaw, Mel Prest and Nancy White, The Space Between brings together minimal, op art (optical art) and geometric abstract works that explore the very process of looking.
Below is a temporary wall drawing Linn made at my cafe about a year ago for the show "AltGeo." This one "only" took a day...a long day, mind you. This drawing has since been painted over.

video : thomas nozkowski
When I was doing my graduate work back in 2000, Thomas Nozkowski came to the Academy as a visiting artist. His studio visit with me was a highlight of my time there. I've always admired the way he thinks and talks about painting.
