on the ground in oaxaca

UPDATE, November 4, 2006--there are more civilian demonstrations and strikes by the federal police in the past few days. Daryl writes first-hand accounts of clashes on his street and provides links to videos.
I've mentioned my old friend Daryl here before. Two years ago he moved from San Francisco to Oaxaca Mexico. He's a terrific writer and keeps a weblog at www.ojitos-in-mexico.com. In the past week, the weblog has become for me a news source, as the city of Oaxaca is currently occupied by troops from the Mexican government because of unrest related to civilians protesting the corrupt governor of the region. Things came to a head when the troops were sent to the city late last week, and there were a few deaths. It seems now that the situation is somewhat stable, if quite tense. Read more on Ojitos, and follow his links.
