in the studio : early september

Listening to, looking at, thinking about, and remembering experiences of birds has been in the forefront of my mind the past few months.

Here are snapshots of two recently completed paintings. The top image is "Martin," 28 x 24 inches. What you can't see in this dreadful photo is the matte striated green that is very thin and soft. It's laid over a rectangular "puddle" of metallic silver that is not perceived at first. The central translucent gloss white image is slightly mis-registered with a hot red/pink color seeping out from underneath.

The bottom image is "Mockingbird," 55 x 43 inches. "Mockingbird" might look familiar. I made a smaller version of it during my residency in Michigan. This is the first time that I've ever done something like this, although it's not a direct enlargement. The media and overall shapes of the canvases are a bit different. The small "Mockingbird" is on a thin-weave canvas, the overall grey is very matte and washy and the off-white trapezoid shapes are painted in thin gloss layers with noticeable brush direction. The large (I just typed "lager"...guess what I've been doing a lot of lately?)...the large "Mockingbird" is longer, has a much more stridently brushed background grey, a different arrangement of seeping colors underneath the trapezoids, and the trapezoids themselves are rendered in colored pumice.
