ntbk

1 Comments:

Hi Douglas...I look forward to seeing what you do with thinner paint. I've also just been thinking about your practice of dispensing with the vowels in some words that you use (i.e., ntbk). I like, though, how the brain fills in the "missing" letters. (Wasn't there a type of puzzle back when I was a kid, where you had to figure out the sentence with the vowels missing?) I've never asked you why you are attracted to that, but it's interesting to consider why (in my words). It reminds me of firstly, ancient Hebrew, which in fact had no vowels...the vowel/connectors were implied/understood (as I understand it). So, there was always an accepted but unseen, underlying pattern of pronunciation, or that communication's modus operandi. Also, it's a little snapshot of your general aesthetic of paring down; of "elimination." It reminded me too, of why I (and perhaps you) like listening to baseball on the radio...it's a generally sparse game, based on a "grid" of play patterns, statistics and numbers, relayed in a type of folksy shorthand through a medium which, I think, is one of the most perfect ever created. All of these things, too, have elements of both general knowledge (universal) and another set of "insider" layers that can be rewarding to those who dig deeper. Anyway...
