news : summer residency

I've heard that people generally fall into three categories at they relate to geography. There are people who gravitate to the mountain, those who identify with the desert, and those who connect to the water. I definitely fall into the latter category. Being near the water clarifies things for me.

So I'm thrilled that I've recently been selected be an artist-in-residence in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore through the Glen Arbor Art Association this coming July. The Sleeping Bear Dunes are in northern Michigan, on the Lake Michigan side. Glen Arbor is a little town tucked into the pine forests nearby. For the past 11 years, I've spent a week with my in-laws in a little town about a half-an-hour south of Glen Arbor, and found out about the possibility of the residency last year.

I have hundreds of photos of the water of Lake Michigan, but as of this writing they remain on film and are not yet scanned. So above you have a photo from last summer in northern Michigan. I'll post something from the lake real soon.

Congratulations, Doug. I've been to Sleeping Bear many times, and always found them amazing. Photos please!

Douglas - this residency is exciting. I can't wait to hear how it goes. And what a great name - sleeping bear. Would make a great painting title. This picture is a good Mennonite abstraction - shuffleboard!

Douglas,
Technically your residency isn't at the Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore. Its at the Glen Lake Art Association which is located near the SBNL. The SBNL has its own nationally juried residency.

Dear Anonymous,
We both do our homework. Not to be technical, but I make no mention of (or claims about) the artist residency program sponsored by the U.S. Park Service. You're right, that's a separate program. The link I provide in my post takes you straight to the web page pertaining to the artist residency program of the Glen Arbor Art Association. What is the intent of your comment?

What is my intent? Simply to point out that when you say "So I'm thrilled that I've recently been selected be an artist-in-residence in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore through the Glen Arbor Art Association this coming July" ,that it is not the SBNL artist in residency program you were selected to.

Hmmm...maybe our "Anonymous" is one of those "robots" we were talking about the other day...the ones that pick up on "inconsistencies" in one's cyberspace. Or maybe "Anonymous" is suggesting that SBDNL is more prestigious than GLAA?? Good grief! Perhaps if you must remain in anonymity, it would be better to niggle elsewhere. Just my two cents.

I think the SBDNL residency is more presitgious.

Hey Gierschick...maybe there should be a 4th type of person to compliment the water, desert, and mountain folk...shuffleboarders!
